The Role of the Atelierista and the Art Studio

The Studio teacher (Atelierista) is another important piece in the process of teaching and facilitating learning in the philosophical perspective of the Reggio Emilia approach. The Studio teacher works with preschool teachers to help develop big and small projects while fostering an enriching experience for the child.
The Atelierista meets often with children to share ideas and find the best way to improve learning through children’s ideas and interests. The studio teacher is trained in visual arts to help guide and create connections from children’s inquiries to the beauty of art, to bring aesthetic awareness, to embrace the notion of time and the understanding of space.
The Art Studio is a place where the unexpected is expected. It is a place for children to experiment and explore different tools and materials. It allows them to be creative and explore sensory skills. It’s a place to explore the soft, the rough, light, nature, and the wonders of imagination. It’s a place where documentation of children’s work is made visible and presentable for appreciation and understanding.
